Wedding Reading Ideas: #5 'A Red, Red Rose '

My final pick for the series is ‘A Red, Red Rose’ This is by Scottish poet, Robert Burns. Written in the 1700's (Yes, that is a long time ago!) If you or your partner has some Scottish heritage, if there are kilts aplenty at your wedding, or even if you just love the words, then this is a great choice! It’s another lovely piece about Love and Burns compares his love, to, as you might have guessed, a Red, Red Rose! This was originally a song, but has been read eloquently at many weddings over the years, and it's a great piece. Comparing love to a freshly bloomed (June is Rose season don't you know!) Rose, the international flower of love! I love this, as the comparison isn't just to that of a Rose, freshly bloomed, but to other things that are far more symbolic of time passing. Rocks melting in the sun, seas running dry, that's a long time! Now, before this turns into a Leaving Certificate dissection of words removing all the fun and romance, let's get to it! (And in the video below, you can even hear it being read in a lovely Scottish lilt at Ella and Ross's wedding in Dublin City Hall by Ross's sister!

A Red, Red Rose - Robert Burns (Non-Religious Ceremony)

O my Luve's like a red, red rose,

That's newly sprung in June:

O my Luve's like the melodie,

That's sweetly play'd in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonie lass,

So deep in luve am I;

And I will luve thee still, my dear,

Till a' the seas gang dry.

Tilla' the seas gang dry, my dear,

And the rocks melt wi' the sun;

And I will luve thee still, my dear,

While the sands o' life shall run.

And fare-thee-weel, my only Luve!

And fare-thee-weel, a while!

And I will come again, my Luve,

Tho' 'twere ten thousand mile!
